SMW+ is a semantic enterprise wiki

First of all SMW+ is a wiki. That means it is an effective tool for online collaboration and joint content authoring over the web. A well-known example is Wikipedia where thousands of endusers contribute content and help creating the world's largest online encyclopedia. In enterprise settings a wiki helps companies to cope with the shortcomings of classic groupware and email systems: It leverages information access and retrieval by providing an open platform instead of isolated communication channels. Another great plus of a wiki is its flexibility. It can cope with informal workflows and supports distributed and agile processes.

SMW+ now combines a wiki's social authoring approach with proven semantic technology. Its semantic capabilities allow you to tag, process and query data. Data is not lost content but it can be enriched with meaning. This enables you to query precisely for the needed information and to generate content in the wiki automatically. Thus you can get rid of manually created lists by letting SMW+ compile them dynamically. It also allows you to aggregate information in suitable views and output formats. Users can e.g. dynamically compile their own task lists or present events automatically in form of an up-to-date time line. In general, the semantic features enable a better organization, browsing and retrieval of wiki contents compared to traditional, non-semantic wikis.

The third cornerstone of SMW+ is that it is ready for enterprise settings. Enterprise scenarios often pose additional requirements to a wiki. Essential characteristics are e.g. convenient authoring for endusers, access control and restriction, and the interlinkage with external data sources. SMW+ provides these features and thus ensures the smooth application and usage in corporate environments.
